LVP – Luxury Vinyl Plank Flooring in Shasta

Vinyl flooring has long been associated with bargain installations, or environments like grocery stores. So why are we now seeing Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) in $2 million condominiums? In the last decade, luxury vinyl plank has made enormous advances in residential flooring.

Laminate flooring eclipsed vinyl long ago as the go-to inexpensive and easy-to-install flooring product for two reasons; laminate’s photo-realistic image layer had the look of wood and its plank format imitated the “long and narrow” shape of real hardwood. Sheet vinyl had practically nothing in the way of wood-look flooring.

luxury vinyl plank (LPV) in ReddingWith its introduction 10 years ago, luxury vinyl flooring became “re-invented” and positioned itself as a viable flooring material for homeowners who are well-educated about flooring. It is also seen as an initiative to capture the homeowners that won’t install solid hardwood due to cost and folks that may be prevented from this by HOA agreements.

Another thing that distinguishes Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) from other types of vinyl flooring is the shape of individual pieces. Traditional sheet vinyl flooring comes in room sizes to minimize or even eliminate seams. Normal vinyl tiles are usually square, most at 12′ X 12″.

Because LVP imitates solid wood flooring (pine teak, maple, oak, walnut, etc) it comes in plank shapes. In this respect, LVP and laminate flooring are the same. But for water, moisture, spills, pets…Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) can be the right choice.

luxury vinyl plank flooring in shasta county californiaQuality LVP has some incredible advantages over other types of flooring. LVP was initially created solely for commercial, retail and hospitality flooring that demanded resistance to heavy foot traffic, along with ease of maintenance and a superior resistance to water damage.  For all these reasons and more, LVP greatly surpasses laminates and hardwood. Over the last decade we’ve seen incredible innovation, where the appearance and style of these luxury floors have developed into stunning wood, stone and tile looks that now rival the real thing and you may not even be able to feel the difference.

Luxury Vinyl Plank Flooring in Shasta

  • Invincible vinyl plank flooring (LVP) offers both easy maintenance and the durability that you seek in vinyl with the incredible natural look only today’s digital manufacturing techniques can deliver. Bottom Line: It’s the look of the real wood at an unreal value.
  • Intensity Surface Shield provides a incredibly tough waterproof wear layer to protect against scuffs, scratches and dirt with minimal maintenance. This helps preserve the LVP flooring’s natural appearance for years to come.
  • Intelligent Support System provides superior sound absorption and flexible, adaptable installation for exceptional comfort and durability in this vinyl plank flooring.
  • Moistureloc creates a watertight seal that never loosens even under tension. Moistureloc™ ensures that water and dust won’t get under the floor, preventing mold and other micro-organisms from forming.
  • Superbase Construction features a 100% dimensionally stable fiberglass core that allows the luxury vinyl plank (LVP) flooring to adapt to all environmental conditions and prevents buckling and gaps.

Laminate Flooring in Shasta County

Laminate flooring is a relatively new approach to flooring which has taken the world of floor surface covering by storm. Versatile, easy to maintain, and reasonably priced, laminate flooring gets better each and every year every year.

The Benefits of Laminate Flooring

Convenient: Natural hardwood flooring comes in planks that are 8 or 10 feet in length, and sometimes even longer. By contrast laminate planks that simulate hardwood are sold in convenient 4 foot strips. They are also available in tile form in varying sizes.

redding laminate flooring expertsVersatility: Today laminate flooring can simulate the look of dozens of different natural hardwood materials. The printing process can also reproduce the appearance of a variety of natural stone, and ceramic flooring materials. With EIR embossed in register texturing they are even able to somewhat reproduce the surface texture of these natural materials. Laminate flooring is one of the quickest growing options in flooring today.

Cleaning: The wear layer of a laminate floor protects the material from stains and some spills making cleaning and maintenance relatively easy. Typically the only regular requirement is sweeping or vacuuming of the floor to remove grit and dirt which can slowly erode the floors wear layer over time.

Installation: The installation of a laminate click together floor is far less cumbersome than real stone or wood. New innovations in the manufacture of this material have made it so that some do not even an adhesive. An entire room can usually be finished in just a day or two.

Goes Anywhere: With the exception of carpet, laminate flooring can be installed over almost any existing floor in the home. As long as a moisture barrier is in place and water prevention measures are taken it can also be installed at any grade. This removes the hassle and expense of having to remove old flooring installations before installing new laminate materials.

The Elements: Laminate flooring is resistant to many of the outdoor agents that can discolor other flooring materials. The wear layer protects it from stains and smudges due to dirt and mud making it a great material for hallways and entryways. It also resists fading from UV light exposure making it popular in sun rooms.

redding laminate flooring experts - laminate floorHealth: Laminate flooring is naturally resistant to the growth of mold and bacteria. It can also be treated with special allergen resistant and anti-bacterial coatings to make them even safer. Also, unlike a certain “liquidator of lumber” our laminate is safe.

Expansion: The nature of the installation process means that the flooring material is not adhered directly to the subfloor. Rather all of the pieces of the floor are interlocked, or adhered one to another. That means that the material can expand, or contract, due to changes in pressure and temperature, without buckling and snapping against the subfloor.

Acclimation: Hardwood needs to sit in an environment for 3-6 weeks so that it can acclimate to the temperature and pressure of the area. Laminates can be installed in as little as 36 hours.

Laminate Ratings: Laminate floors are rated for use and durability by a third party. As a general rule of thumb, the higher the AC Rating, the higher the price. With this in mind, don’t overpay and don’t underpay. Be sure to pick a floor with the AC rating that best suits your needs. Consult with the laminate flooring experts in Shasta County; F.T. of Redding/Carpet One for the rating that best suites your needs.

Residential Laminate Flooring in Shasta County

Laminate Pros and Cons

One of the most sought-after amenities in a home is wood flooring. With its natural appearance and warmth underfoot, wood is always a beautiful and timeless choice.

Original hardwood floors are among the benefits of many older traditional homes. Newer homes that have a lower price point but that still desire the natural look of wood often use laminate to win over home buyers and homeowners.

No matter your preference, there are pros and cons when it comes to hardwood versus laminate wood flooring.

Obviously, price is a big consideration. But so is durability and the ability to make repairs as the floor ages.

residential laminate flooring in reddingPricing – It should come as no surprise that wood flooring is more expensive than laminate. While exotic hardwoods have become rarer, advances in laminate have resulted in more options at lower pricing.

Pro – Laminate wins here. Not only are material costs lower, the installation costs are lower as well.

Con – Wood. Again, many harvested wood products are now considered “exotics”. In general, hardwood floors have much higher purchase and installation costs than laminate.

Durability – Make no mistake. Hardwood is the real deal. But in an active home with kid, pets, even sunshine, and you’ll see laminate edges out wood.

Pro – Laminate resists scratches, moisture, and general wear and tear better than wood. It’s also generally easier to clean.

residential laminate flooring in redding 02Con – Although wood adds considerable value to your home, it is more easily scratched, prone to excessive moisture damage, and can show wear and tear in highly trafficked areas.

Repairs  Flooring is the one component of your home that will have to be repaired or replaced at some point in time. From minor accidents to excessive wear and tear, to sunlight (it doesn’t just affect carpets) both laminate and hardwood have advantages and disadvantages, but in general, the edge goes to wood.

Pro – Hardwood can be repaired by sanding out the imperfections and refinishing the floor. This gives it the edge over laminate. Yes. laminate planks can be replaced, but you may not always have a perfect match.

Con – When exposed to direct sunlight, wood is more likely to have fade issues when compared to laminate, which has UV protection.

The one thing that they both have in common is that your home can benefit from the look of wood flooring, and ultimately, it’s up to you whether you use wood or laminate.

hardwood flooring in shasta county california

Hardwood Flooring in Shasta County California

You have options for hardwood flooring in Shasta County California, beware the liquidators, apart from formaldehyde issues there are other things to beware.

Hardwood Flooring in Shasta County California

A little background on liquidator stores like Lumber Liquidators.

A well-known issue is Lumber Liquidators sold hardwood flooring in Shasta county up until the middle of last year that violated both California and Federal formaldehyde levels. They plead guilty, paying California $2.5 million and feds much more.

Also this year, they were sentenced for a felony for mislabeling hardwood origins and other violations of the Lacey Act. Total fines were over $13 million. It is the largest fine in the history of the Lacey Act.

And let’s not forget the Better Business Bureau is always upset with phrases like “End of Quarter Flooring Liquidation Sale” or “End of Year Liquidation Sale” as liquidation infers bankruptcy. According to the BBB guidelines: “Emergency or distress sales, including but not limited to bankruptcy, liquidation and going out of business sales, should not be advertised unless the stated or implied reason is a fact, should be limited to a stated period of time, and should offer only such merchandise as is affected by the emergency. “Selling out,” “closing out sale,” and similar terms should not be used unless the concern so advertising is actually going out of business. The unqualified term “liquidation sale” means that the advertiser’s entire business is in the process of actually being liquidated prior to actual closing. Advertisers should conform with the requirements of applicable local, state and federal laws.”

But the Biggest Issue is….

They are not liquidating anything. They sell flooring products as “overruns” or “overstock” when if fact it is made specifically for their stores (and made cheaply).

The biggest consumer complaint isn’t that if you have bought laminate flooring from lumber liquidators you should order a badge that changes color when formaldehyde levels in you indoor air is too high… Or even a class action lawsuit on faulty bamboo flooring….nope.

It’s that the sale prices online are never in the store. That is as old as retail itself.

It’s called bait and switch.

Floor Stores in Redding – Important Questions to Ask

So you’ve decided to upgrade your flooring. There are plenty of floor stores in Redding, but be sure to ask these important questions.

Floor Stores in Redding – Important Questions to Ask

There are plenty of floor stores in Redding and the surrounding area here is Shasta County. Liquidators, home-improvement stores, chain stores, wholesalers, dealers and more.

So you have options. We would like to think you would go where the professional floor experts are. A flooring store. Like F.T. of Redding/Carpet One.

But regardless of where you choose to shop, there are questions you need to ask when visiting floor stores in Redding.

feature pet friendlyIs this product compatible with my lifestyle?

Different types of flooring suit different types of lifestyles. For example, in areas where kids, pets (or kids with pets) will be playing, you most likely need a durable, stain-resistant floor. A flooring professional can help you narrow down floor options based on your lifestyle, and the usage of the area in your home where you are replacing the flooring. If the guy that wandered over from the paint section at the home-improvement store to help you stumbles on this question, you may want to talk to an expert.

What are the warranties and guarantees on the flooring?

It’s important to find out what will be included in your purchase, what will cost extra and what type and length of warranty coverage you will receive. Simply put, buttons pop off of $200 dollar shirts. Manufacturing errors happen. Know your coverage. Ask for a copy in writing, and read it before purchasing.

samples - Floor stores in reddingAre samples available?

Some stores like “liquidation” ones have no samples. the home-improvement stores typically have small size samples and flooring stores can loan out larger samples that will give you a better idea on how the floor will coordinate with your room.

Now we get to the 3 big questions you positively need to ask.

What is the installation process?

The installation in truly the most important factor. It can be said, with a fair degree of certainty, that low quality flooring installed correctly, will look better and perform longer than high quality flooring installed poorly.

So the installation, and who does it, is very important!

Ask how long it will take to have the floor installed, what’s included and not included, what you’ll need to do in preparation for the installation, and whether they’re able to dispose of the old flooring.

Flooring in Redding CA - Beware installation dayIs there an installation warranty?

At some stores we won’t name, if there is a problem after the install, the installers blame the store and the store blames the installers and neither are addressing the problem you see or deal with every day. Bottom line here? Buy from a store that also does the installation. One contact makes life so much easier.

And the most important question…

What are the hidden costs?

question-423604_640Depending on where you purchase your flooring, things like floor padding, delivery, moving furniture and installation can cost extra and some box stores and their contracted installers get very creative. Be sure to ask about possible outside costs associated with buying new floors and factor them into the final price before making a decision. It may help to bring a complete estimate to a specialty flooring store for a full comparison.

all too common carpet myths

All Too Common Carpet Myths

With a name like Carpet One, we are experts in carpeting. Here are 5 all too common carpet myths we try to correct on almost a daily basis.

All Too Common Carpet Myths

Carpet has been the most popular floor covering in America for decades for good reason - carpets feel soft, reduces noise and insulates rooms, keeping them cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. But there are some common carpet myths and misconceptions out there.

I should not have carpet when suffering from Asthma/Allergies

There is a reason this is number one on the list of common carpet myths because the exact opposite is true. Carpeting helps you breath easier.

Common Carpet Myths - carpets trap allergensThis myth has been disproved in study after study. Independent studies conducted by the EPA have shown that carpet traps and immobilizes allergens, keeping them from circulating in the air stream. Carpeting acts as a trap for allergens and is capable of holding significant quantities of soil, dust and other substances including toxic lawn chemicals, VOCs, and allergens tracked in from outside.. The carpet holds on to the particles until you are ready to remove them.

However, sweeping or vacuuming can stir up those allergens. The EPA recommends that people with asthma or allergies use a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA air filter. This type of air filter will trap very small particles and allergens that other vacuum cleaners allow to pass through.

Carpet helps people with allergies by keeping allergens out of the air.

Carpeting is bad for the environment

With all the talk about "renewable flooring" such as hardwood, bamboo and the like, it's easy to see how carpeting can get a bad rap. Look for the Green Select Logo on wool carpeting for instance.

And no, with the formaldehyde scare at a liquidator store hardwood selection in the news recently, there has been no formaldehyde in carpeting since 1978. The reason this myth is so persistent is there are companies that sell home test kits. Some of these companies are less than honest, and claim that their test kits will test your home for all sorts of nightmares including "formaldehyde from carpet". Even if your carpeting is 40 years old, the formaldehyde has dissipated long ago.

Carpet is hard to maintain

vacuum-24229_640Carpet is made from fiber. Like yarn. So is a sweater. If you were to put a sweater on the floor and walk on it for a year, would it get dirty? Of course it would. We can expect the same from carpet. We launder our clothes. We need to clean carpets as well.

Frequent vacuuming removes soil particles before they get below the surface of the pile, where they are far more difficult to remove. Carpet in a typical household should be thoroughly cleaned every 12 to 18 months. Hot water extraction systems provide the most effective cleaning. Professional carpet cleaners generally get the best results.

Have you ever seen a shirt or blouse and thought "I won't buy that because I have to clean it?"

Carpeting is outdated and boring

Carpets come in patterns ranging from traditional to modern and in stylish colors like all the new grays and other top trends.  Many consumers use a mix of carpet, hardwood and tile in their homes to incredible, beautiful effect.

Do you sell carpet made by Berber?

The term "berber" is not a brand name, nor is it the name of a company. "Berber" actually comes from the Berber people, who are the indigenous people of North Africa prior to the Arab people expanding to North Africa.

The Berber people are known for their particular style of rough, coarse woolen products. When carpets were first made with big bulky loops, it reminded some people of the coarse woolen products made by the Berber people. And so, berber carpet was born. Berber carpets are a modern style of carpet, distinguished by a loop pile construction type that gives a similar appearance to the distinct knot of traditionally woven Berber carpets.

Today, we use a capitalized Berber to refer to the people, and the lowercase berber to refer to a style of carpet.
